About Trg Kralja Tomislava
History & Heritage
Named after the first Croatian King, Tomislav, the square was designed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The iconic monument of King Tomislav on horseback, created by sculptor Robert Frangeš-Mihanović, was erected in 1947, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom.
Location & Landscape
Situated in the Lower Town of Zagreb, it is the first part of the 'Lenuci Horseshoe' (a U-shaped system of city squares and parks) that visitors see when exiting the main train station. The square features meticulously maintained lawns, colorful flower beds, and shaded pathways.
Architecture & Surroundings
The northern end of the square is dominated by the Art Pavilion (Umjetnički paviljon), an elegant yellow exhibition building dating back to 1898. The surrounding streets feature beautiful classicist and secessionist buildings that define Zagreb's Lower Town.
Urban Significance
As a protected urban and cultural space, Trg Kralja Tomislava plays a central role in Zagreb's social and cultural life. It frequently hosts open-air concerts, cultural events, and the popular 'Advent in Zagreb' winter festival.
